Video games going downhill?

I used to love the video games so much more as a kid when I play gamecube and ps2. There were so many games with good story modes that I could play hours and hours and hours. Go look up a list of the top video games for the past 2 or 3 years. It seems like EVERY game falls into one of the following categories. FPS, TPS, RPG, Sports/racing. Why can't someone come out with something original? I feel like every game on the market is the same thing and I'm getting tired of it. So if anyone knows of any good new games please educate me.

I'm unsure what you're getting at but there are and have been awesome video games released. There are and always have been different genres.

The ones you listed will always exist separately and in some cases possibly fuse together in the future.

Dragon Age Origins is awesome. The Mass Effect series is also great as well, those are a few rpgs that come to mind; Mass Effect is more of a shooting and rpg combined. There are others that are the same.

There are countless fighting games out, shooters too and racing. I would suggest investing in a blockbuster card or gamefly account, maybe just rent them from Redbox before you play and also read the reviews online.

It's probably nostalgia, but i enjoyed the older games, like the ps2 ratchet and clanks.
Dragon Ball is BETTER then DBZ!

@ DBZNut: You. Win.

I dont like video games nearly as much as I did when I was younger. I still play games but they are too multiplayer-focused and not story based.

DEVIL MAY CRY. If you have played the previous DMCs then you know why the DmC sucks so much. FAILED REBOOT.

I agree, many games these days are awful and heavily recycled, though I have no problem with reboots, if You can make a good thing better or at least give us time to waste while someone does improve the real thing then why not.

Though we seem to be pulling out of those trends recently, the Dead Space, Mass Effect, and Splinter Cell series as well as the upcoming Watch Dogs are rather unique compared to many games.
I also find myself for some reason addicted to Borderlands and Battlefield 3, Battlefield 3 being unique because of its massive battlegrounds, multi-tiered and varied combat and enviromental destruction, and Borderlands because of its over-the top co operative fun.

While I generally dislike most multiplayer-focused games, those two feel so different and much more fun than things like Call Of Duty.

As far as racing games go, I miss Burnout, its about the only sports series besides Tony Hawk's or Skate that I've even enjoyed, besides motorcross.

Fighting games arent doing very much in the way of improvement either.

MMO's are booming right now, DC Universe is surprisingly fun and Star Wars The Old Republic is a lot of fun, despite its steadily decreasing player rate.

However, 2000 seems to be the centurey of competetive gaming as opposed to team effort, but with games like Splinter Cell Double Agent's unique multiplayer showing up on the market, I cant say thats a bad thing, and not many series would dare to replicate that multiplayer.

All I can really say is keep waiting for good games, there are a few of them still out there.

I think its just that the industries have adapted. Their demographic is now FPS players, with games like Call Of Duty being some of the biggest advertised/selling games of all time. Older games like The Legend Of Zelda and Metroid have taken back-seats to the newer generation of gaming. I've no real doubt in saying that in the past decade, 'gaming' has been less for true 'gamers' and more for casual fans who love FPS games.

It Just recently came out but Darksiders 2 is AMAZING. Great combat, awesome long (30hr+) story mode, diverse amounts of armor, weapons, and talismans. all around great game lots of quests and side quests. plus you play as the horseman of the apocalypse death, how cool is that? you should really check it out!

There are still some modern great games out though, I would consider games like Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire, and even the Mass Effect series modern classics, but as nostalgia always gets me too, older multiplayer games especially, like Goldeneye, Timesplitters 2, Twisted Metal, will always be my preference.

However, Pokemon Black/White are the best games they made since Gold/Silver, maybe even the best Game Freak have ever made

To be completely fair the 90's were THE decade for RPGs and platform games, and those RPGs were amazing. Platform games don't exist anymore. If not as popular as they used to be. At one point platform games had such a large market share in the gaming industry, no game genre has had such a big share in the console market since or before the platform games of the 90's. Alot of Sonic and Mario games were platform, games where you'd have to jump from one place to another. Any ways games are still good these days, you just have to know where to look. I'm not a big FPS fan but I really like Gears of War, Max Payne and Bio Shock. I always liked adventure and RPG, even though those games are not as strong as they were in the 90's and early 2000's there are still some later exceptions like Zelda Twilight Princess or World of Warcraft.
What is your favorite style of gaming? I liked RPGs, and let me tell you to retract your statement because RPGs these days are no where near the RPGs of the SNES and PS1!

Yeah if anyone is a fan of rpgs I would strongly suggest Skyrim, the Mass Effect series, Dragon Age Origins and the Expansion. Maybe buy Dragon Age 2 pre-owned. It's a step down map wise but a step-up(slightly) in combat).

Haha, wanna have some fun, pay 15 bucks for Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, get over the fact it isn't a plat former like the original, and enjoy the crap out of it, I enjoyed myself more on that than on any RPG or FPS game hahaha
